There are many and varied criteria when one considers a healthy weight loss plan. In general, there are 3 basic things to look for when evaluating a healthy eating plan and lifestyle modification plan.
1) Modified and restricted food menus. Each eating plan should consist of a balance of protein, carbs and fats. This varies with each plan. Plans that are heavy on protein or fat or carbs should be used on a temporary basis. For example, for a certain period of time one can safely go on a high animal protein diet. Or one can safely take a vegan food plan for an extended period of time.
It is never wise to eat out of balance for an extended time period, though. Your body functions best if you have access to a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds as well as moderate amounts of naturally raised animal protein and dairy products.
I will note in each eating plan whether it is a safe diet to eat long term as well as if it is suited to a lifetime maintenance plan.
2) Sensible and Practical Exercise. Our body is designed to function best moving. It cannot be emphasized enough - you must resign yourself to adding exercise to your daily routine. NO options.
While you may have physical challenges getting started on a sensible exercise plan, there will not be lasting fat loss unless you take regular exercise.
I will note whether the lifestyle modification includes regular and functional exercise.
3) Other Lifestyle changes. Here I will point out whether the author recommends other sensible additions/subtractions in your life. Including: new habits, hobbies, friends, etc. Excluding: smoking, drinking, drugs, & other stress contributors to your life.
4) Additional comments section. I will make note of the overall “feel” of the plan. Is it a fad? Is it designed to be more of a temporary diet? Or is it truly a lifestyle modification that is safe and effective?
